Starting in 2020, Powerboat Racing Curacao (PRC) plans to organize hydroplane racing based on the J and A hydroplane classes. The Sorensen design offers a robust platform as both classes are satisfied.
Our plans were purchased from D. Sorensen and the build took in excess of 150 hours. All material were sourced from local hardware stores. The hull is extremely rigid even though its made from 3 and 4 mm Oukume plywood, along with ripped 1×2 and 1×3 lumber. The running gear was acquired from certified APBA supplier CMP/Keller Outboard Racing Hardware.

Ideally we would like to provide parents and their kids the opportunity to build a hydroplane together. PRC will provide the necessary assistance and guidance as needed in order to complete a hydroplane, as well as the instruction needed to go racing. Adults can also compete in hydroplane racing in the following classes:
- J-Hydro, powered by a 15 hp modified or 15 hp open outboard engine
- A-Hydro, powered by a 25 hp stock outboard engine.
Back in the late 1980’s, ESPN brought us Unlimited Hydroplane Racing powered by turbine engines. An individual I always followed was, amongst others, the driver of Miss Budweiser, Chip Hanauer. Retired from racing, Chip nowadays produces videos about boating and one that’s of particular interest illustrates how past World Champion Lee Sutter (aged 71) gets back into a A-Hydro. There are a variety of ways one can go hydroplane racing:
- build your own hydroplane, some carpentry experience recommended. Approximate cost Ang. 2.500,00 (including running gear),
- have one custom made, if one doesn’t have the time, experience or special equipment. From Ang. 3.600,00
- purchase one. Either import one from the USA or acquire one from PRC’s existing stock. Prices starting at about Ang. 5.000,00
